Northeast Spotlight Series – Spring in the garden!
— Spring in the garden
How our garden grew.
Our Garden Committee had a great spring prepping and planting in the school garden — and every grade got their hands dirty. Here's how it all came together.
— Every grade pitched in
A four-grade collaboration.
From plant research to soil prep to planting day, Northeast students at every grade level took ownership of a step. The result is a garden that's truly theirs.
5th
Grade
Did the research.
Worked with Mrs. Von Wiegen in science class to choose the best plants for our climate, the time of year, and the size of our garden.
3rd
Grade
Cleared the way.
Took on the tough job of weeding the garden, laying down mulch, and cleaning up leaves to get the beds ready.
2nd
Grade
Prepped the soil.
Filled the garden beds with fresh soil — the foundation for everything that came next.
1st
Grade
Planted everything.
Each 1st grade class paired up with a 5th grade class — older students explained their picks and helped the younger ones plant tomatoes, strawberries, cucumbers, snapdragons, and marigolds.
We had beautiful planting weather, the garden looks beautiful, and we can't wait to see how everything grows this spring.
— Your PTA at work
Membership made this possible.
Programs like the school garden are funded directly by Northeast PTA membership and family donations. When you join or renew, you make hands-on learning like this happen.
— Planting day
Hands in the dirt.
— With gratitude
A huge thank you.
None of this happens without the people who showed up. Special thanks this season to:
Garden Committee Chairs
Samantha Stuckert & Dawn Fletcher
For leading every step of this season's garden program — and for everything that goes into making it run.
Beds & build-out
The Stuckert family
For rebuilding the flower beds — the literal foundation of this year's garden.
Faculty partners
Mrs. Von Wiegen & Ms. Lademar
For the 5th grade science research and for coordinating the 5th–1st grade pairings on planting day.
Northeast Principal
Dr. Putrino
For supporting the garden program and championing hands-on learning at Northeast.
And to every 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade teacher who carved out classroom time for the garden, and every Garden Committee volunteer who showed up to help — thank you.
